The Nervous System controls and coordinates all the functions of your body and is connected to every organ, tissue and cell that makes up your body. When you feel hot or cold, feel a feather running across your arm, or feel someone pinching your cheek, it is the nervous system working. When you take a drink, it is the nervous system that allows you to move your arm up and down and gives you the ability to taste what you are drinking. Your body could not function without the nervous system.
Signals travel from each of the sense organs via nerves, to the brain for interpretation. The brain can then react by sending commands to other areas of the body.
The nervous system is controlled by the brain. The brain tells your organs how to function. It communicates with these organs via the spinal cord and 32 pairs of spinal nerves. The nerves pass through little holes between your vertebrae, or spinal bones, then head out through the body to attached to whatever organs, tissues, or cells nature intended them to supply.
The Autonomic Nervous System is the special part of the nervous system responsible for the functioning of your organs. This system communicates by nerves that travel to the various organs (and glands) in the body. If these nerves are interfered with in any way (most commonly Vertebral Subluxation), there will be a decrease in the function of the organs, tissues or cells supplied by that nerve. Since most of these organs and glands normally function without concious control, the lack of function may be symptomless. As the nerve damage progresses, the sensory nerves that travel along these same pathways are affected, and you may experience symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or pain. Even worse, if the tissues normally associated with removing this interference are affected, this could result in a dangerous cycle of increased interference and malfunction resulting in subluxation degeneration.
Vertebral Subluxation
Normal Spine
Phase 1 Degeneration
Phase 2 Degeneration
Phase 3 Degeneration
Normal curves with equal disc spacing.
Misalignment and malfunction with soft tissue damage and nerve irritation
Disc narrowing, calcium deposition, bone spurs, increased nerve irritation.
Joint immobilization, bone fusion, nerve atrophy and scar tissue.
Removing the interference to the nervous system is the job of the Chiropractor. By removing this blockage, not only does the pain usually subside, but many people also noticed a change in the way their organs are functioning. Reports of decreased headaches, decreased menstrual cramps, elimination of stomach pain or irritable bowel syndrome, decreased allergies or sinus headaches, elimination of asthma-symptoms are all common observations. Virtually any disease or ailment can be caused or complicated by vertebral subluxation.
If you have symptoms of any kind, your body is telling you something is wrong. Do not wait until permanant changes set in, get your spine checked immediately by a qualified chiropractor.
Many people realize it is necessary to practice good dental hygiene as well as visit their dentist on a regular basis for cavity prevention, good breath, and healthy teeth and gums. The same principle holds true for chiropractic care. Practicing good spinal hygiene and regular chiropractic check-ups will prevent subluxation and allow your nervous system to function at its optimum.
